Description: The story is set in Gotham City in 1981. Arthur Fleck, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, works as a clown-for-hire at a company named Ha-Ha’s. Despite battling severe depression, Arthur finds a glimmer of hope in making others laugh and performing. One day, while advertising a store by waving a sign, a group of teenagers steals it, leading Arthur to chase them into an alley. There, they assault him, hitting him with the sign and kicking him while he’s on the ground.
Gotham City during this period faces rampant crime, unemployment, and poverty. Arthur relies on a social worker for his medication and to manage his mental health struggles. On his way home by bus, Arthur tries to entertain a young boy by making faces. However, the boy’s mother scolds him, prompting Arthur to explain his uncontrollable laughter with a card detailing his mental condition.
Arthur lives in a high-rise apartment with his sick mother, Penny, portrayed by Frances Conroy. They often watch Murray Franklin’s talk show, played by Robert De Niro, with Arthur fantasizing about appearing on the show and winning Murray’s approval. In his imagination, he captivates the audience by sharing how he cares for his mother, leading to an emotional moment on stage.
Penny, who once worked for the wealthy Thomas Wayne, played by Brett Cullen, is fixated on him, writing letters in hopes of improving their dire living conditions.
