The film’s development was officially announced by Lionsgate in May 2019, prior to the release of its predecessor. It is the first installment in the franchise not penned by creator Derek Kolstad. Principal photography occurred from June to October 2021, with locations spanning France, Germany, New York City, and Japan. Originally set for release on May 21, 2021, the film was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered in London on March 6, 2023, and was released in the United States on March 24. Garnering critical acclaim, the film has grossed over $427 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing entry in the series and the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2023.
The story unfolds with John Wick in New York City, plotting his revenge against the High Table while in hiding with the Bowery King. He travels to Morocco to eliminate the Elder, a figure of authority within the High Table. In retaliation, Marquis Vincent de Gramont, a High Table member, recruits Winston, the manager of the New York Continental hotel, and his concierge, Charon. The Marquis, armed with unlimited resources, vows to kill John and reprimands Winston for his past failures.
