Description: Joe Bell is a 2021 film that tells the story of Jadin Bell, a teenager from LaGrande, Oregon, who faces bullying at school for being gay. His father, Joe, played by Mark Wahlberg, initially advises Jadin to handle the situation on his own, but Jadin’s mother, Lola, reassures him of their love and support. Despite joining the cheerleading squad, Jadin senses his father’s discomfort. Joe later promises to improve and expresses his love for Jadin.
Jadin endures relentless harassment from classmates, both in person and online. While performing at a football game, he is ridiculed by the crowd, but Joe does little to intervene. The bullying escalates when Jadin is physically assaulted in a locker room. After meeting with a school administrator, who suggests transferring schools or seeking therapy, Jadin’s family is discouraged from taking legal action. Tragically, Jadin takes his own life, leaving behind a suicide note.
Devastated by his son’s death, Joe decides to walk across America to New York City to raise awareness about the devastating effects of bullying. Nine months later, he delivers a speech on tolerance at a high school, with Jadin’s presence lingering in his thoughts. Along his journey, Joe faces challenges, including encountering individuals resistant to his message. The story highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the harmful impact of bullying, especially on vulnerable individuals like Jadin.
