Description: In 1968, Pastor Chuck Smith, based in Southern California, faces challenges connecting with the younger, free-spirited hippie generation, causing his church to struggle. His daughter Janette offers a ride to a hitchhiking hippie named Lonnie Frisbee, who introduces Smith to his mission of spreading the teachings of Jesus. Smith gradually opens up to Frisbee and welcomes other hippies into his home, including the band Love Song. This leads to a thriving movement aimed at evangelizing hippies and others.
Meanwhile, high school student Greg Laurie skips his Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps class and attends a Janis Joplin concert with a girl named Cathe. At the event, Timothy Leary advocates for drug use as a means of self-discovery. However, Greg becomes aware of the dangers of drugs when Cathe’s sister falls seriously ill from an overdose. Their friendship ends when Cathe accuses Greg of not caring about drug safety.
Later, Cathe encounters Smith and Frisbee’s ministry while listening to Lonnie preach, leading her and Greg to reconcile. Despite resistance from Cathe’s conservative parents, they find solace in the ministry, which grows in popularity and becomes known as the “Jesus Revolution” or “Jesus freaks,” even earning a Time magazine cover. However, Lonnie eventually leaves for Florida due to disagreements with Smith. Greg takes charge of a ministry branch in Riverside, marries Cathe, and becomes a well-known pastor. Smith and Frisbee are remembered as pioneers of the Calvary Chapel movement and key figures in the Jesus movement.
