Description: “Jersey” is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language sports drama film written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, marking his debut in Hindi cinema. The movie is a remake of Tinnanuri’s 2019 Telugu film of the same name. Starring Shahid Kapoor as a former cricketer who returns to the sport to fulfill his son’s dream of owning a jersey, the film also features Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur in pivotal roles. Produced by Geetha Arts, Dil Raju Production, Sithara Entertainments, and Brat Films, the story revolves around Arjun, a cricketer who, at the age of 36, decides to revive his career to prove his abilities and achieve his son’s wish of seeing him play for the Indian national team.
The official announcement for the film was made in October 2019, with principal photography beginning in Chandigarh in December 2019. However, production faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed in December 2020. Initially set for a theatrical release on August 28, 2020, the film’s premiere was postponed several times and eventually released on April 22, 2022.
Speculations about remaking the Telugu original began shortly after its release in 2019. Shahid Kapoor was confirmed as the lead, while Shraddha Kapoor was initially considered for the female lead. Later, Kannada actress Rashmika Mandanna was rumored to make her Hindi debut in the film, but Mrunal Thakur was ultimately cast in the role. Pankaj Kapur joined the project as Coach Murthy.
Filming resumed in October 2020 after the pandemic-induced hiatus, with production shifting to Dehradun. Key scenes were shot at The Doon School and Kasiga School, with the cricket grounds, buildings, and pavilions prominently featured in the film. During production, Shahid Kapoor reportedly sustained an injury requiring thirteen stitches but recovered swiftly to continue filming.
