Description: “Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy,” released in 2012, is a captivating Bengali film that delves into the world of ghost stories. The narrative unfolds with Tarinikhuro, also known as Tarinicharan Banerjee, a character created by Satyajit Ray, sharing eerie tales with a group of young boys from his fan club. The film explores three distinct stories: “Anath Babur Bhoy” and “Brown Saheber Bari” by Satyajit Ray, and “Bhoot Bhobishyot” by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Initially, a fourth story titled “Lucknow-er Duel” was planned but was later omitted to maintain the film’s length.
Director Sandip Ray takes inspiration from the success of “Bhooter Bhabishyat” and presents a film that stays true to its source material with minor deviations in settings. Tarini Khuro, the master storyteller, serves as the connecting thread between the three narratives, captivating his young audience with tales gathered from his personal and professional experiences.
The first story, “Anath Babur Bhoy,” introduces an eccentric gentleman who claims to be an expert on ghosts. As a seasoned ghost hunter, he has traveled across India, researching life after death, spirits, vampires, black magic, and voodoo. During his journey to Raghunathpur, he encounters a young writer and shares his latest mission: spending the night at the infamous Halder Bari. Dwijen Bandopadhyay delivers a compelling performance as Anath Babu, and the eerie backdrop of a crumbling mansion adds to the haunting atmosphere. However, the interior setup and sound design fall short of delivering the expected suspense and chill.
Overall, “Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy” offers a blend of suspense and storytelling, staying faithful to its literary roots while providing a cinematic experience for fans of ghost stories.
