**Storyline:**
In the coastal town of Amity Island, a young woman named Chrissie Watkins goes for a swim in the ocean and is attacked by an unseen predator. The next day, her remains are discovered on the shore, leading the medical examiner to conclude that her death was caused by a shark. Police Chief Martin Brody decides to close the beaches, but Mayor Larry Vaughn convinces him to reopen them, fearing the town’s summer economy will suffer. The mayor suggests that Chrissie’s death was a boating accident, and Brody reluctantly agrees—until a young boy, Alex Kintner, is killed by the shark in front of beachgoers.
A reward is offered for the shark’s capture, sparking a frenzy among amateur hunters. Meanwhile, local fisherman Quint offers to catch the shark for $10,000. Oceanographer Matt Hooper examines Chrissie’s remains and confirms the attack was carried out by an unusually large shark. When a tiger shark is caught, the mayor declares the beaches safe, but Hooper suspects it’s not the culprit. His doubts are confirmed when no human remains are found in its stomach.
Brody and Hooper later discover a partially sunken boat and find a large great white shark’s tooth embedded in its hull. Despite this evidence, the mayor refuses to close the beaches, allowing only increased safety measures. On the Fourth of July weekend, tourists flock to the beaches. After a fake shark prank causes panic, the real shark attacks again, killing a boater and leaving Brody’s son in shock. Filled with guilt, the mayor finally agrees to hire Quint to hunt the shark.
