Based on the renowned story “Jamraud” by Waryam Singh Sandhu, the film adaptation shares the same title: “Jamraud – Jazbaat da kila fateh krna saukha nahi.” Sandhu’s earlier work, “Chauthi Koot,” which was adapted into a movie, earned a National Award. “Jamraud” tells the tale of a father who hides the news of his son’s death in Canada from his family.
Sandhu, speaking to The Tribune, explained that Jamraud is a historically significant fort known for being unconquerable. In Punjabi culture, the term “Jamraud” is often used metaphorically to challenge someone’s boastful claims.
Directed by Navtej Sandhu from Amritsar, this marks his debut feature film. Known for his short films like “Nooran,” “Kambdi Deori,” and “Gawachi Pagg,” which were showcased at the Cannes Film Festival, Navtej aims to create meaningful cinema rooted in Punjabi literature.
Navtej shared, “Jamraid symbolizes strength, reflecting its historical significance as an unconquerable fort. I enjoy making unique films that draw from Punjabi literature, addressing real-life themes and societal issues. I believe such content is lacking in today’s cinema, and I strive to convey important messages through my work.”
