While recovering in the United States, Ryan meets Cathy Muller, a medical student assisting him with rehabilitation, and Thomas Harper, a CIA official who recruits him.
A decade later, Ryan is working undercover on Wall Street for the CIA, monitoring financial transactions for signs of terrorist activity. When Russia loses a crucial vote at the United Nations and the financial markets react unexpectedly, Ryan uncovers that billions of dollars from Russian entities have vanished. Most of these funds are linked to Viktor Cherevin, a powerful Russian tycoon.
Ryan’s employer has dealings with Cherevin, which prompts Ryan to investigate further. Discovering that certain accounts are inaccessible to him as an auditor, Ryan travels to Moscow. There, he narrowly escapes an assassination attempt by a bodyguard-turned-killer. After sending an SOS, he is surprised to find that Harper arrives as his backup. At a debriefing, Ryan explains how Cherevin’s shadow investments could trigger a devastating economic collapse in the United States following a staged terrorist attack.
The next day, Ryan learns from Cherevin that the company in question has been sold, halting his audit. Meanwhile, Cathy, now Ryan’s fiancée, suspects he is being unfaithful and secretly flies to Moscow to confront him. Ryan reveals his CIA involvement, and Harper devises a plan to include Cathy in their mission to infiltrate Cherevin’s office. At a restaurant across from Cherevin’s office, Ryan intentionally causes a scene with Cathy, distracting Cherevin while Ryan gains access to his office and downloads crucial evidence of corruption.
