**Plot Summary:**
In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a man drives a van into a parking garage near PNC Park. Armed with a Springfield Armory M1A, he assassinates five people from a distance along the North Shore Trail before fleeing the scene.
Detective Calvin Emerson and his team discover a shell casing and a quarter used for parking at the crime scene. The fingerprint on the quarter matches James Barr, a former U.S. Army sniper. During a raid on Barr’s home, police find the van, reloading equipment, the rifle, and Barr asleep in his bed.
During interrogation, District Attorney Alex Rodin offers Barr a choice: confess and face life in prison or refuse and face death row. Instead, Barr writes, “Get Jack Reacher,” a mysterious drifter and former Army Military Police officer. Intrigued by Barr’s case, Reacher arrives in Pittsburgh after seeing the news.
Helen, a defense attorney, offers Reacher access to the evidence if he agrees to investigate, but Reacher declines. He reveals Barr’s dark past—Barr had previously gone on a killing spree in Iraq, targeting individuals involved in multiple rapes. Although Barr was never prosecuted due to the Army’s desire to bury the incident, Reacher vowed to take him down if he ever killed again.
This gripping story unfolds as Reacher uncovers the truth behind the brutal shooting and confronts his own past.
