Description: “It: Chapter One,” released in 2017, is an American supernatural horror film directed by Andy Muschietti. The screenplay was written by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman. Produced by New Line Cinema, RatPac Entertainment, KatzSmith Productions, Lin Pictures, and Vertigo Entertainment, it serves as the first installment in a two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name. The film primarily covers the first half of the book.
The story is set in Derry, Maine, and follows a group of seven outcast children known as The Losers’ Club. They are terrorized by an eponymous entity that emerges from the sewers, forcing them to confront their personal fears. The film stars Jaeden Lieberher as Bill Denbrough and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The supporting cast includes Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Nicholas Hamilton, and Jackson Robert Scott.
Development for the film began in 2009 when Warner Bros. planned to bring the story to the big screen. Initially, David Kajganich was set to direct, but Cary Fukunaga later took over. However, after Fukunaga’s departure, Andy Muschietti was hired as the director in June 2015. Muschietti drew inspiration from 1980s films like “Stand by Me” (1986) and “Near Dark” (1987). Principal photography took place in Toronto and surrounding areas, including Port Hope, Oshawa, and Riverdale, between June and September 2016.
The film premiered in Los Angeles on September 5, 2017, and was released in the United States on September 8, 2017, in both 2D and IMAX formats. It was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $701 million worldwide and becoming the fifth-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time at the time of its release. It also achieved the title of the highest-grossing horror film of all time, unadjusted for inflation. Critics praised the film for its performances, direction, cinematography, and musical score, with many calling it one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s work.
The film is also known as “It: Part 1 – The Losers’ Club” and marks the first entry in the “It” film series. It is the second adaptation of King’s novel, following the 1990 miniseries directed by Tommy Lee Wallace.
