Description: The film “Ip Man: The Awakening” (2022) follows the journey of a young and confident Ip Man as he arrives in Hong Kong from Foshan during the 1930s. Unlike the wise and noble figure he later becomes, this version of Ip Man is brash and self-assured. Shortly after his arrival, he intervenes in a kidnapping attempt on a bus, saving a woman from a group of men. This act leads him to meet her brother, Hu Bufeng, a local coolie who has questionable ties to the British police, hinting at the city’s corruption.
As the story unfolds, Ip Man grows closer to Hu Bufeng and his sister while uncovering a human trafficking operation run by Westerners. The ring exploits young women and is supported by bribed officials and complicit locals. Determined to fight injustice, Ip Man confronts the criminals, earning his place as a hero once again.
The film draws inspiration from previous entries in the Ip Man franchise and other classic titles like “Once Upon a Time in China,” blending tribute and homage with familiar tropes. Colonialists are once again cast as villains, while the oppressed Chinese suffer under their rule until Ip Man emerges as a one-man force for justice. The narrative highlights Ip Man’s transformation from a boastful youth to a selfless protector, driven by the atrocities he witnesses.
Miu Tse delivers a standout performance, portraying Ip Man’s evolution with nuance and charm. His portrayal is one of the most likable in the series, enhanced by his striking appearance and expressive demeanor. While the film relies on well-worn clichés, its exploration of Ip Man’s growth offers a redeeming quality, making it a memorable addition to the franchise.
