Description: In 1964, after losing his wife and being diagnosed with throat cancer due to chronic smoking, Ip Man learns that his rebellious son, Ip Ching, has been expelled from school for fighting a bully. To find educational opportunities for his son, Ip Man travels to San Francisco, leaving Ching under the care of his friend, Fat Bo, and promising to call him every night.
In San Francisco, Ip Man discovers that his former student, Bruce Lee, has angered the local martial arts community by teaching Wing Chun to non-Chinese individuals and writing a book about martial arts in English. To enroll Ching in an American school, Ip Man needs a referral letter from the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. However, the association’s president, Grandmaster Wan Zhong-hua, refuses to provide the letter due to Ip Man’s support for Bruce Lee. A confrontation ensues, and Ip Man leaves after breaking a table during the argument.
Later, Ip Man encounters Wan’s teenage daughter, Yonah, who is being racially harassed by a rival cheerleader, Becky, and her friends. Yonah defends herself, but the situation escalates, and Ip Man intervenes to protect her. He escorts Yonah home, where Wan accuses him of using his daughter to obtain the letter and challenges him to a fight. Their duel is interrupted by an earthquake, and Wan declares they will finish the fight at the Mid-Autumn Festival. Ip Man declines, explaining he only ensured Yonah’s safety, and leaves.
