**Storyline:**
On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela is freed after spending 27 years in Victor Verster Prison. Four years later, he becomes South Africa’s first black president. His leadership faces immense challenges in the post-Apartheid era, including widespread poverty, crime, and deep racial divisions between black and white South Africans. Even within his security team, tensions between white officers and black ANC members reflect the country’s broader struggles.
During a match between South Africa’s rugby team, the Springboks, and England, Mandela observes that some black spectators cheer for England instead of their own team. He understands that the Springboks, a predominantly white team, are seen by many as a symbol of Apartheid. To promote unity, Mandela convinces the South African Sports Committee to support the Springboks as they prepare to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
He meets with the team’s captain, François Pienaar, and inspires him with the belief that a Springbok victory could unite the nation. Mandela shares the poem “Invictus,” which had given him strength during his imprisonment. Despite skepticism from both black and white South Africans, Mandela and Pienaar remain steadfast in their belief that rugby can bridge the country’s racial divide.
