Invasion, also known as Attraction 2 (Russian: Вторжение, romanized: Vtorzhenie), is a 2020 Russian science fiction action film directed and produced by Fyodor Bondarchuk’s company, Art Pictures Studio, and Vodorod. The film continues the events described in Attraction (2017). Starring Irina Starshenbaum, Rinal Mukhametov, Alexander Petrov, Yuri Borisov, Oleg Menshikov, and Sergei Garmash, the story follows Julia (Starshenbaum), who gains extraordinary abilities after being saved by extraterrestrial technology. Her powers attract both human researchers and alien civilizations, posing a threat to Earth.
Invasion is Bondarchuk’s third film and the eighth Russian movie shot in IMAX format. It premiered in December 2019 and was widely released in Russia on January 1, 2020, by Walt Disney Studios Sony Pictures Releasing (WDSSPR). This was the final film distributed by WDSSPR before its dissolution.
The plot unfolds three years after the events of Attraction. Julia’s newfound abilities make her a target for secret government research, while also drawing the attention of alien civilizations, leading to an impending invasion. Hekon returns to save her, this time with the help of Sol.
The project’s sequel was officially confirmed by Bondarchuk in March 2017, with a budget of 645 million rubles. Preparation took a year and a half. Unlike the first film, which was set in Moscow’s Chertanovo district, Invasion takes place in central Moscow, including areas around Moscow State University. Modern Russian Armed Forces equipment, such as the Aurus Senat sedan, was used during filming.
