Description: The 2014 film “Into the Woods” follows the story of a Baker and his wife who long for a child but are burdened by a curse placed on the Baker’s family by a Witch. Years ago, the Baker’s father stole from the Witch’s garden while his wife was pregnant, leading the Witch to demand their daughter as compensation. To make matters worse, the Baker’s father also took magic beans, resulting in the Witch being cursed with ugliness by her own mother. To lift the curse and grant the Baker and his wife a child, the Witch sets a task: they must collect four specific items for her potion—a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. However, the Witch is forbidden from touching these items herself.
This quest leads the Baker and his wife into encounters with familiar fairy tale characters. They meet Jack, who is selling his beloved cow, Milky-White, and offer him magic beans inherited from the Baker’s father. These beans grow into a giant beanstalk. They also cross paths with Red Riding Hood, whose red cape catches their attention, and Rapunzel, the Witch’s adopted daughter and the Baker’s biological sister, who is trapped in a tower. Additionally, they encounter Cinderella, who is fleeing from her Prince and wearing golden slippers.
Despite numerous challenges and mishaps, the Baker and his wife eventually gather all the required items to break the curse. Once the potion is made, each character finds their own “happy ending.” Cinderella marries her Prince, Rapunzel is rescued and weds Cinderella’s Prince’s brother, and the Baker and his wife finally achieve their dream of starting a family. The story weaves together classic fairy tales into a tale of adventure, consequences, and fulfillment.
