Description: In the small fishing town of Nightmute, Alaska, 17-year-old Kay Connell is found murdered. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) detectives Will Dormer and Hap Eckhart are called to assist the local police in the investigation at the request of Chief Nyback, an old colleague of Dormer. Ellie Burr, a young local detective who admires Dormer’s investigative skills, greets them upon their arrival. Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Internal Affairs is scrutinizing one of Dormer’s past cases. During their flight to Alaska, Eckhart reveals his plan to testify against Dormer in exchange for immunity, prompting Dormer to worry that his past convictions, obtained using questionable evidence, could be overturned if the cases are reopened.
During the investigation, Dormer lures the murderer to the crime scene, but the suspect escapes into the fog, shooting and injuring a police officer. In the confusion, Dormer spots a figure in the fog and fires his backup weapon, only to discover he has accidentally killed Eckhart. Knowing Internal Affairs will doubt it was an accident due to Eckhart’s pending testimony, Dormer claims the suspect shot Eckhart and hides the .38 pistol the suspect dropped. Ellie Burr is assigned to investigate the shooting, and her team uncovers a .38 caliber bullet at the scene. Later, Dormer disposes of the .38 bullet by firing it into an animal carcass and replacing it with a 9mm slug from Eckhart’s body to cover his tracks.
