Description: Growing up can be a challenging journey, and this is especially true for Riley, whose life takes a turn when she moves from the Midwest to San Francisco due to her father’s new job. Inside Riley’s mind, her core emotions—Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness—reside in Headquarters, the control center that guides her through daily life. While they strive to maintain positivity, conflicts arise as they navigate the challenges of a new city, home, and school.
Riley’s emotions work together to manage her memories, which are stored as colored orbs sent to long-term memory each night. Five essential “core memories” power her personality, represented by floating islands. Joy takes the lead, often trying to minimize Sadness’s influence.
At 11 years old, Riley’s move to San Francisco proves difficult. The new house is small and outdated, her father is preoccupied, and even the local pizza shop serves broccoli-topped pizza—a disaster for Riley. To make matters worse, the moving van with their belongings is delayed in Texas. On her first day at school, Sadness alters Riley’s happy memories, causing her to cry in class and create a sad core memory. In an attempt to fix this, Joy accidentally dislodges the other core memories, disrupting Riley’s personality islands in the process. Joy and Sadness, along with the core memories, are then sucked out of Headquarters and sent into long-term memory storage, leaving Riley’s emotional balance in jeopardy.
