**Storyline:**
Set in February 1961, the film follows Llewyn Davis, a struggling folk singer in New York City’s Greenwich Village. His solo album, *Inside Llewyn Davis*, is failing to sell, leaving him penniless and reliant on the couches of friends and acquaintances. After a performance at The Gaslight Café, Llewyn is mysteriously attacked by a shadowy man in a suit with a Southern accent.
Awakening in the apartment of his friends, the Gorfeins, Llewyn accidentally lets their cat escape and takes it with him to the home of Jim and Jean Berkey. Despite Jean’s reluctance, she allows Llewyn to stay, though she reveals she’s pregnant and that he might be the father. The next morning, the cat disappears again. Jean later asks Llewyn to help pay for an abortion, though she’s upset it might not even be his child.
Desperate for money, Llewyn visits his sister, who suggests he return to the Merchant Marine. Instead, she gives him a box of his belongings, which he leaves behind. On Jim’s invitation, Llewyn records a novelty song about space travel, accepting $200 upfront for the abortion. However, he discovers he has credit with the gynecologist’s office due to a previous payment he made for another woman two years earlier, who ultimately decided to keep the child.
