Description: “Innocence” is a 2020 South Korean crime drama film written and directed by Park Sang-hyun. Starring Shin Hye-sun, Bae Jong-ok, and Heo Joon-ho, the movie was released on June 10, 2020. Inspired by a true story, it follows Ahn Jung-in (played by Shin Hye-sun), a lawyer who takes on the case to defend her mother after she is falsely accused of murder during her husband’s funeral.
The film marked Shin Hye-sun’s first leading role in a movie. She shared that her father encouraged her to take on the project, and she was drawn to the rare opportunity to portray a lawyer in a female-led legal drama. To prepare for the role, she found inspiration in Elizabeth Sloane, the main character of the 2016 film “Miss Sloane,” played by Jessica Chastain.
Bae Jong-ok, who plays Jung-in’s mother, accepted the role for the chance to transform her acting, as her character appears 30 years older than her. She was intrigued by the complex and tangled relationships between neighbors with shared histories. Heo Joon-ho was cast as the mayor, a role the director believed only he could portray due to the character’s duality of greed and corruption.
Originally scheduled for release on March 5, 2020, the film faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After several postponements, it finally premiered on June 10, 2020. “Innocence” offers a gripping exploration of justice, family, and moral complexities in a dramatic courtroom setting.
