The story follows Mortimer “Mo” Folchart (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Teresa “Resa” Folchart (Sienna Guillory) as they read the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” to their baby daughter, Meggie. During the reading, a red velvet hood mysteriously appears. Twelve years later, Meggie (Eliza Bennett) visits an old European bookshop with her father. Unbeknownst to her, Mo is searching for a copy of the book *Inkheart*.
After finding the book, Meggie encounters a horned marten outside the shop, which tries to bite her. A man named Dustfinger (Paul Bettany) emerges, claiming to be an old friend of Mo. Dustfinger pleads with Mo to “read him back into the book,” but Mo flees with Meggie.
They travel to Italy to visit Meggie’s great-aunt Elinor (Helen Mirren). Mo reveals to Meggie that nine years ago, while reading *Inkheart* to her, he accidentally released Dustfinger, a fire dancer, due to a special gift he has possessed since birth. However, the book’s villain, Capricorn (Andy Serkis), and his henchman, Basta (Jamie Foreman), were also freed. During their escape, Mo realizes his wife, Resa, has been taken into the book.
Dustfinger later arrives with Basta, who captures the group, destroys Elinor’s library, and takes *Inkheart*. They are taken to Capricorn’s castle in the real world.
In captivity, Mo explains his gift to Meggie and Elinor: when he reads a person or object out of a book, someone from the real world is sent into it, which is how his wife disappeared. Capricorn forces Mo to use his gift to acquire treasure from *The Arabian Nights*, and during this, Farid (Rafi Gavron), one of the 40 Thieves, is imprisoned.
Dustfinger, who was promised a return to the book, is betrayed by Capricorn. Ultimately, the group escapes using a tornado from *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*.
