**Storyline:**
Harvard University professor Robert Langdon wakes up in a hospital in Florence, Italy, with no memory of the past few days but haunted by terrifying visions. Dr. Sienna Brooks, his attending physician, explains that his memory loss is due to a gunshot wound to the head. When an orderly informs Langdon that the police are coming to question him, the officer turns out to be an assassin named Vayentha, who kills the orderly. Brooks helps Langdon escape, and they flee to her apartment.
Among Langdon’s belongings, they discover a Faraday pointer—a miniature image projector containing a modified version of Sandro Botticelli’s “Map of Hell,” inspired by Dante’s “Inferno.” They soon realize this is the first clue in a trail left by Bertrand Zobrist, a dangerous extremist who believed drastic measures were needed to control Earth’s overpopulation. Zobrist had committed suicide three days earlier after being pursued by government agents.
Langdon and Brooks piece together that Zobrist, obsessed with Dante, created a fictional superweapon called “Inferno,” capable of wiping out half the world’s population. Meanwhile, they are hunted by both Vayentha and government agents led by Elizabeth Sinskey, Langdon’s former lover. Vayentha’s employer, Harry Sims, CEO of a private security firm called “The Consortium,” orders her to eliminate Langdon, as he has become a liability.
