**Storyline:**
After the death of their mother, Nawal, an Arab immigrant in Canada, twins Jeanne and Simon meet with French Canadian notary Jean Lebel, their mother’s employer and family friend. Nawal’s will reveals an unfulfilled promise, denying her a proper burial unless Jeanne and Simon locate their previously unknown brother and their father, whom they believed had died. While Jeanne is determined to honor their mother’s request, Simon, having had a strained relationship with Nawal, hesitates to join the search.
Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Nawal came from a Christian Arab family in an unnamed Middle Eastern country. She fell in love with a refugee named Wahab and became pregnant, but her family murdered Wahab and nearly killed her in an honor killing. Her grandmother spared her, making her vow to leave the village after giving birth and start anew in the fictional city of Daresh. The grandmother tattooed the baby’s heel and sent him to an orphanage.
While Nawal studied in Daresh, a civil war erupted, accompanied by war crimes. Nawal opposed the conflict on human rights grounds. Her son’s orphanage was destroyed by a Muslim militant, Chamseddine, who turned him into a child soldier. After narrowly surviving a massacre of Muslim refugees by Christian Nationalists, Nawal joined the Muslim fighters and eventually shot a nationalist leader. She was later imprisoned, raped by a torturer named Abou Tareq, and gave birth to the twins.
Jeanne travels to her mother’s homeland, uncovering her past and convincing Simon to join her. With Lebel’s assistance, they discover their brother’s name and track down Chamseddine, piecing together the haunting legacy of their family.
