Description: The 2016 film *In This Corner of the World* tells the story of Suzu, a cheerful young woman from the seaside town of Eba near Hiroshima. At the age of 18 in 1943, she marries Shusaku, whom she had known since childhood, and moves to Kure City, a major naval port located 15 miles from Hiroshima. As Suzu adjusts to her new life as a homemaker, the increasing threat of the Pacific War begins to disrupt the lives of the townspeople.
Food shortages become widespread, prompting government-implemented rationing. Preparations for air raids and evacuations intensify, and Suzu takes on responsibilities such as food distribution, air raid training, and repurposing traditional kimonos into practical clothing for emergencies. Her family even constructs an air-raid shelter in their garden.
Living on a hillside with a view of the Japanese Naval Fleet, Suzu often watches ships in the harbor with her niece, Harumi. However, her simple joys are overshadowed by the harsh realities of war. A childhood friend, Tetsu, now a sailor, visits her in 1944, knowing it might be their last meeting. By spring, Shusaku is drafted into the Navy and stationed 40 miles away in Otake City.
In 1945, as U.S. air raids devastate the mainland, Kure becomes a target for bombings. Suzu faces unimaginable losses, including the death of her brother and niece, as well as the amputation of her right hand. Struggling with depression, she contemplates returning to her hometown of Hiroshima for refuge during the summer festival.
This poignant film captures the resilience of the human spirit amidst the chaos of war.
