**Storyline:**
Set in British Hong Kong in 1962, the film follows Chow Mo-wan, a journalist, and Su Li-shen, a secretary at a shipping company. Both are Shanghai expatriates who rent neighboring rooms in an apartment. Their spouses often work overtime, leaving them alone for extended periods. Surrounded by a bustling community of mahjong-playing neighbors and their meddling landlady, Mrs. Suen, Chow and Su gradually become closer.
Initially, their interactions are merely polite, but they soon discover that their spouses are having an affair. This revelation deepens their bond as they confide in each other. Chow invites Su to collaborate on a martial arts serial for a newspaper, and their frequent time together draws the attention of their neighbors. To avoid gossip, Chow rents a hotel room where they can work in private.
Although their relationship remains platonic, they eventually acknowledge their growing feelings for each other. When Chow accepts a job in Singapore, he asks Su to join him. Despite her initial decision to accompany him, she arrives too late at the hotel.
The following year, Su travels to Singapore and visits Chow’s apartment. She calls him but remains silent when he answers. Later, Chow realizes she was there after noticing a lipstick-stained cigarette butt in his ashtray. In a poignant moment, Chow shares a story with a friend about an ancient tradition: when someone has a secret they cannot reveal, they whisper it into a hollowed tree in the mountains and cover it with mud.
