Description: In the House is a 2012 French comedy-drama directed by François Ozon. The film tells the story of Germain, a middle-aged literature teacher, who forms a bond with his 16-year-old student, Claude Garcia, while helping him improve his writing skills. Claude, a precocious and rebellious teenager, becomes increasingly transgressive and antisocial, showcasing a talent for manipulating relationships and fulfilling his desires. His actions lead to seducing his friend’s mother and the teacher’s wife, ultimately causing Germain to lose his job. Despite this, the two remain connected through their shared passion for storytelling.
The film, originally titled *Dans la maison*, is loosely based on Juan Mayorga’s play *The Boy in the Last Row*. It explores themes of creativity and narrative structure, marking it as one of Ozon’s finest works. The movie was produced by Mandarin Cinéma with a budget of 9.2 million euros and received support from France 2 Cinéma and Mars Films. Filming took place over eight weeks in August and September 2011.
At the 2012 San Sebastián International Film Festival, *In the House* won the Golden Shell for Best Film and the Jury Prize for Best Screenplay. The story is set in a French secondary school, where Germain, portrayed by Fabrice Luchini, teaches literature. Luchini’s performance adds depth to the film, further highlighting Ozon’s ability to craft compelling and thought-provoking cinema.
