Description: Usnavi de la Vega shares the story of Washington Heights with children. He owns a bodega and introduces key figures in the neighborhood: Abuela Claudia, the community’s matriarch who raised him; Kevin Rosario, who operates a taxi service; Benny, Kevin’s employee; salon owners Daniela, Carla, and Cuca; Vanessa, Usnavi’s love interest; and his cousin Sonny, who works for him.
Usnavi’s lawyer, Alejandro, informs him that his late father’s business in the Dominican Republic is up for sale. This sparks Usnavi’s dream of reviving the family legacy. Meanwhile, Kevin’s daughter, Nina, returns from Stanford but reveals she couldn’t afford tuition. Kevin reassures her not to worry.
As the neighborhood faces changes, Daniela’s salon is forced to relocate to the Bronx due to rising rents. Nina, feeling lost after dropping out of Stanford, seeks solace. Vanessa, who aspires to be a fashion designer, struggles with a rejected rental application due to poor credit. Back at the bodega, Sonny tries to set up Usnavi on a date with Vanessa.
A winning lottery ticket worth $96,000 sold at the bodega sparks dreams and conversations among the residents. Meanwhile, Benny comforts Nina, encouraging her to believe in her potential. Usnavi contemplates taking Sonny to the Dominican Republic but learns that their undocumented status prevents it.
Kevin shocks Nina by selling his business to fund her education, but she refuses the money, leading to a heated argument. At a club, Usnavi’s nervousness on his date with Vanessa causes tension, culminating in a fight when the power goes out. The night ends with fireworks lighting up the neighborhood, but Usnavi and Vanessa’s relationship remains strained.
