Description: In the 1860s, within the lower levels of Parisian society, Thérèse Raquin is a young, beautiful woman burdened by sexual repression. She is trapped in a loveless marriage to her frail cousin, Camille, which was orchestrated by her controlling aunt, Madame Raquin. Thérèse spends her days working behind the counter of a small shop and her evenings observing her aunt and a group of acquaintances playing dominoes. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she meets Laurent LeClaire, her husband’s charming friend. The two begin a secret affair, which sets off a chain of tragic events.
During an outing on a lake with Laurent and Thérèse, Camille is killed by Laurent, who then hides the truth by making it appear as a drowning. Madame Raquin struggles to accept her son’s death and is later struck by a stroke. However, she overhears Laurent and Thérèse confessing to their crime. Despite her condition, she manages to alert one of their friends, who reports them to the authorities.
To avoid facing punishment for murder, Laurent and Thérèse decide to end their own lives. They share a final kiss after drinking poisoned champagne while on a boat, dying in the presence of Madame Raquin. The story unfolds as a tale of passion, betrayal, and inevitable consequences in the oppressive atmosphere of 19th-century Parisian society.
