Description: The movie *In Isolation* (2022) begins with a tense scene where a man pursues a woman through a forest at night. Their confrontation escalates into a struggle, and although she manages to trap him in a bear trap, she makes the mistake of getting too close, allowing him to grab her. After more fighting, he gains control and ominously tells her, “You and me are gonna get real close.” The unsettling situation is heightened by the absurdity of his mindset despite being injured by the bear trap, reflecting the film’s often illogical narrative.
The story then shifts to an earlier time, focusing on the chaos caused by a rapidly spreading virus in a nearby city. Protests and looting worsen the situation, adding to the societal collapse. Jane, the main character, is isolated in her home when a power outage and a severe fall trigger a flashback to a traumatic childhood event. However, this turns out to be a conversation she has with her therapist, creating a layered flashback structure.
As the plot unfolds, Jane is joined by her friend Kris, her boyfriend Will, and Ray, a man she has been communicating with online, to celebrate her birthday. The gathering takes a dark turn when Jane experiences another flashback and abruptly leaves.
Directed by Alexey Meets and co-written by James Duke, the film presents its narrative in a confusing and disjointed manner. The dialogue, originally written in Russian and apparently poorly translated, further complicates the viewing experience. Additionally, the story is frequently interrupted by discussions questioning the validity of the virus, conspiracy theories about the quarantine, and claims that it’s a ploy to strip away freedoms. These elements, reminiscent of real-world controversies, may feel redundant and overdone, especially given recent global events.
