Storyline:
This tale follows a familiar setup: the matriarch of a criminal family is imprisoned, a widow due to the police operation that caught her. She has two sons—one more principled, adhering to the notion that living outside the law requires honesty, while the other is a ruthless, sadistic killer who mocks his brother’s emotions. Their mother, suffering from a terminal illness, yearns to spend her final days in freedom and ensures her family’s criminal legacy remains secure. To achieve this, she orchestrates both her parole and a major heist.
Directed by John Swab, this crime drama is set on the outskirts of Tulsa and stars Melissa Leo as Ida (nicknamed “Ida Red” after a Bob Wills song), alongside Josh Hartnett as the morally grounded Wyatt and Frank Grillo as the volatile Dallas. The family dynamic is further complicated by Wyatt’s struggles after a failed truck heist and the relentless scrutiny of an FBI agent, played by William Forsythe. Meanwhile, Dallas takes extreme measures to eliminate loose ends, including a chilling hospital scene.
The story also explores the strained relationships within the family, particularly Ida’s estrangement from her daughter Jeanie, who is married to a compassionate police officer.
