Description: Haruki stumbles upon a diary in a hospital waiting room, only to discover it belongs to his popular classmate, Sakura. She confides in him that she is secretly battling a terminal pancreatic illness. Despite her condition, Sakura is determined to live a normal school life and is drawn to Haruki due to his calm reaction to her situation. The two develop a close friendship and begin spending time together.
During a school break, Sakura invites Haruki on a train trip to Fukuoka, where they play truth-or-dare and share a hotel room. This closeness stirs suspicion and resentment among Sakura’s friends and classmates. Together, Haruki and Sakura work through her bucket list, but her sudden hospitalization interrupts their plans. During her stay, they sneak out to watch fireworks together. After being discharged, Sakura messages Haruki to meet for lunch but fails to appear. Later, Haruki learns from the news that Sakura was stabbed on her way to meet him and has passed away. Overwhelmed with grief, he avoids attending her funeral.
Sometime later, Haruki visits Sakura’s mother to request her diary. Her mother recognizes him and shares a letter Sakura left behind, instructing him to keep the diary and have her best friend, Kyoko, read it. Kyoko had been unaware of Sakura’s illness and harbored animosity toward Haruki. As he reads the letter, Haruki is overcome with profound sorrow, experiencing grief unlike anything he’s ever felt. Before leaving, Sakura’s mother asks for his name. When he replies “Haruki,” she remarks that their names—Haruki (spring trees) and Sakura (cherry blossom)—were destined to complement each other.
