Description: The 2019 film *I Am Mother* tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world where an automated bunker, designed to repopulate humanity, is activated after a global extinction event. A robot named Mother raises a human embryo into a teenage girl, referred to as Daughter, over the course of several years. Mother explains that she needs to practice parenting before creating more humans.
Decades later, Daughter repairs Mother’s hand and learns complex moral and ethical lessons from her, preparing for an upcoming exam. During a power outage, Daughter catches a young rat but is devastated when Mother incinerates it, citing the dangers of surface contamination. Daughter’s curiosity about the outside world grows, especially after discovering an injured woman begging for help outside the bunker’s airlock.
Daughter lets the woman in, making her wear a hazmat suit. Mother, suspicious, warns Daughter about the risks of interaction with outsiders. Despite Mother’s warnings, Daughter becomes increasingly distrustful. After finding a firearm in the woman’s belongings, Daughter becomes alarmed when the woman removes her suit, claiming there is no contamination. When the woman discovers Mother’s presence, she demands her weapon back, leading to a tense confrontation. Mother disarms the woman and agrees to help her, though Daughter must work to gain the woman’s trust to assist other survivors.
The film explores themes of trust, morality, and the complexities of human-machine relationships in a dystopian setting.
