Description: “Hypnotic” (2021) is a film that unfortunately falls into the category of low-effort, budget-conscious productions that have become common among streaming platforms. While a low budget doesn’t always equate to low quality, this movie struggles to engage the audience, making it difficult to stay invested. The story revolves around Jenn, a woman in her thirties portrayed by Kate Siegel, who is trying to get her life on track. At a friend’s party, she encounters Dr. Meade, a charismatic hypnotherapist played by Jason O’Mara, who offers to help her overcome her struggles. Despite initial hesitation, Jenn agrees to undergo hypnosis. However, she soon discovers that Dr. Meade’s motives may not be as pure as they seem.
The film opens with a poorly executed attempt at creating tension through a clichéd scenario, setting the tone for what follows. Over the course of its 88-minute runtime, the plot deteriorates, with Dr. Meade’s villainous nature becoming glaringly obvious early on. The lack of suspense or surprises makes it a tedious watch. The writer, Richard D’Ovidio, who previously penned the gripping thriller “The Call,” fails to recreate the same level of engagement here. While “The Call” was a captivating woman-in-peril story, “Hypnotic” falls flat, offering little more than a forgettable b-movie experience.
