**Plot Summary:**
Joseph Mersault, along with his wife Anne and daughter Renee, lives in the secluded Canadian wilderness, earning a modest living as fur trappers. Joseph teaches the enthusiastic Renee the skills of baiting and trapping animals, while Anne manages the household chores at their cabin.
Their peaceful existence is disrupted when a dangerous wolf starts attacking and consuming the animals caught in their traps. Despite Anne’s objections, Joseph ventures out alone to hunt and eliminate the wolf.
During his pursuit, Joseph discovers fresh tracks and sends Renee back home for her safety. Continuing his hunt, he stumbles upon a horrifying scene: a group of young women brutally slaughtered and arranged in a ritualistic manner.
Shaken by the discovery, Joseph returns home but keeps the grim truth to himself, only telling his family that he failed to shoot the wolf. The next day, he pretends to continue hunting the wolf but instead begins tracking the killer responsible for the gruesome murders.
When Joseph doesn’t return after a day, Anne grows increasingly worried and reports the wolf to local police officers Barthes and Lucy. They dismiss her concerns, stating that the wolf is acting naturally in the wild and that reporting it could lead to a federal investigation, potentially jeopardizing their home on federal land.
Running low on food, Anne is forced to shoot a baby deer, which upsets Renee. Renee then teaches her mother how to properly skin an animal—a skill Anne had never learned, as Joseph had always handled it.
The family’s struggle for survival deepens as they face both the dangers of the wilderness and the sinister threat lurking nearby.
