Description: Ricky Baker, a troubled teenager abandoned by his mother, is placed in the care of Bella Faulkner and her husband Hector, known as Hec, in a remote rural area. Bella quickly warms Ricky’s heart by taking him hunting and gifting him a dog for his 13th birthday, which he names Tupac after his idol, Tupac Shakur. However, when Bella unexpectedly passes away and Ricky learns he’ll be taken back into child services, he stages a fake suicide by setting a barn on fire and flees into the wilderness with Tupac.
Hec locates Ricky but breaks his ankle during the search, forcing the two to camp together. Meanwhile, authorities discover the burnt barn and assume Hec, grieving and unstable, has kidnapped Ricky. Their suspicions grow when Hec and Ricky encounter three hunters who wrongly accuse Hec of harming the boy. Hec confides in Ricky about his troubled past, including prison time for manslaughter and his inability to read. Ricky, in turn, shares his fear of returning to the foster system or juvenile prison. The pair decide to disappear into the bush, evading authorities.
A nationwide manhunt begins, and as they work together to avoid capture, Hec and Ricky gradually form a bond. Their journey leads them to an unconscious diabetic ranger. Hec chooses to stay with the ranger while Ricky seeks help. Ricky meets a girl named Kahu, who takes him to her family, marking the next chapter in their survival story.
