Description: In 1931 Paris, 12-year-old Hugo Cabret lives with his widowed father, a clockmaker who works at a museum. Hugo’s father discovers a broken automaton, a mechanical man designed to write with a pen. Together, they attempt to repair it and document their progress in a notebook. After his father tragically dies in a fire, Hugo is taken in by his alcoholic uncle, Claude, who maintains the clocks at Gare Montparnasse railway station. When Claude vanishes, Hugo secretly continues his uncle’s work, fearing the station inspector, Gustave Dasté, will send him away if Claude’s absence is discovered. Determined to repair the automaton, believing it contains a message from his father, Hugo steals parts but finds the machine requires a heart-shaped key to function.
Hugo is caught stealing from a toy store, and the owner, Georges, confiscates his notebook, threatening to destroy it. Isabelle, Georges’s goddaughter, encourages Hugo to confront Georges and retrieve the notebook. Georges offers Hugo a deal: work at the toy store as compensation, and he might return the notebook. Hugo agrees, balancing his new job with his duties as the station’s clockkeeper. He befriends Isabelle, who wears a heart-shaped key given to her by Georges. Using the key, Hugo and Isabelle activate the automaton, which draws a scene from the film *A Trip to the Moon*, a movie Hugo’s father once described to him. Isabelle recognizes the signature on the drawing as that of Georges Méliès, her godfather. The two sneak into Georges’s home, where they find a hidden collection of drawings but are caught by Georges.
Days later, at the Film Academy Library, Hugo and Isabelle discover a book on the history of cinema that praises Méliès’s work. They meet the author, René Tabard, a film expert who is stunned to learn Méliès is still alive, as he disappeared after World War I along with his films.
