Basu Chatterjee might want to rethink his decision to create a film like this and let movie enthusiasts cherish the fond memories of his earlier works, such as “Choti Si Baat” or “Baton Baton Mein.” When a film is co-produced by individuals from both the Indian and Bangladeshi film industries, it’s almost certain that the main characters will be from both countries, the supporting cast will be a mix of both, and the locations will include Kolkata and Dhaka. While ticking off these expected elements, the veteran director, Basu Chatterjee, seems to have overlooked crucial aspects like the film’s storyline, screenplay, and, most importantly, the acting.
Watching this movie, one can’t help but feel sorry for the director, who has not only directed but also written screenplays for some of Bollywood’s classic films and earned six Filmfare awards. The only question that lingers after watching this film is: What compelled him to direct it?
The story revolves around Deepa (Ridhdhima) and her boyfriend Sanjay (Ferdous). Based on the dialogues and settings, the film appears to be set in modern times. However, Deepa, a PhD student, is always seen wearing sarees and reading a novel that’s 25 years old. Sanjay, on the other hand, is preoccupied with office politics, leaving Deepa feeling neglected. So, when she gets the chance to apply for a lectureship at a college in Dhaka, she eagerly takes it.
In Dhaka, she reconnects with her estranged college sweetheart, Nabin (Abhiraj). Their reunion reignites old feelings, changing Deepa’s life.
The film suffers from significant continuity issues. For instance, 7 PM in Kolkata is depicted as 2 PM in the afternoon, the same movie posters appear outside a theater over a span of at least four years, and while Sanjay uses emails at work, he and Deepa communicate through letters when she moves to Bangladesh. These inconsistencies are just a few examples of the film’s flaws.
