Description: In 1892, settler Rosalee Quaid and her family are attacked by a Comanche war group, resulting in the deaths of her husband and three children. Rosalee narrowly escapes by hiding under a rock outcrop.
Meanwhile, at Fort Berringer, New Mexico, Captain Joseph Blocker is nearing retirement when he is ordered by Colonel Abraham Biggs to escort Yellow Hawk, a dying Cheyenne war chief, and his family back to their tribal lands in Montana. The mission is mandated by President Harrison. Blocker, who harbors deep hatred for Native Americans due to Yellow Hawk’s role in the deaths of his soldiers, initially refuses. However, facing the threat of a court-martial and loss of his pension, he reluctantly accepts.
Blocker sets out with a group including First Sergeant Thomas Metz, Corporal Woodson, Lieutenant Kidder, and Private Dejardin. Shortly after leaving the fort, Blocker challenges Yellow Hawk to a knife duel, but the chief refuses, stating he is ready for death. Blocker orders Yellow Hawk and his son, Black Hawk, to be chained.
The group discovers the Quaid homestead, where they find Rosalee’s husband dead and Rosalee herself traumatized. Despite her initial fear of the Native Americans in the group, Rosalee joins them until they reach Fort Winslow, Colorado. Along the way, they are ambushed by Comanches, resulting in the death of Dejardin and severe injury to Woodson. Blocker and the survivors manage to repel the attack.
The next day, the bodies of three fleeing Comanches are found. Blocker deduces that Yellow Hawk and Black Hawk killed them during the night. This incident begins to shift the dynamics between Blocker and the Cheyenne family, as mutual respect slowly emerges despite their shared history of conflict.
