**Plot Summary:**
Peter Beaupre, Alice Ribbons, Burton Jernigan, and Earl Unger are international criminals working for a terrorist organization. In Silicon Valley, California, they steal a $10 million missile-cloaking microchip and hide it inside a remote-controlled toy car to smuggle it through San Francisco International Airport. However, due to a baggage mix-up, an elderly passenger named Mrs. Hess, traveling to Chicago, accidentally takes the bag containing the car.
The thieves arrive in Chicago and start searching every house in Mrs. Hess’s neighborhood to retrieve the chip. Meanwhile, eight-year-old Alex Pruitt receives the toy car as a gift from Mrs. Hess for shoveling her driveway. Shortly after, Alex contracts chickenpox and is forced to stay home.
While observing his neighbors, Alex notices the suspicious behavior of the four criminals. After two unsuccessful attempts to report them, he attaches a camera to the toy car and uses it to spy on the group. This leads to a chase when the thieves spot the car. Curious about their interest in the toy, Alex opens it and discovers the stolen microchip. He contacts the local Air Force Recruitment Center to inform them of his discovery, requesting they alert the proper authorities.
Eventually, the criminals realize Alex has been watching them and decide to break into his house. Alex, prepared with the help of his pet rat Doris and his brother’s parrot, sets up a series of booby traps around the house. When the thieves enter, they trigger the traps and suffer various injuries.
As the criminals pursue Alex through the house, he manages to escape and rescue Mrs. Hess, who had been tied up in her garage by Alice. Beaupre ambushes Alex, but Alex cleverly uses a bubble gun resembling a Glock to scare him off.
