Description: “Hollywood Stargirl” is a 2022 American teen romantic drama film directed by Julia Hart, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jordan Horowitz. Serving as a sequel to the 2020 film “Stargirl,” based on Jerry Spinelli’s novel of the same name, it does not adapt the book’s sequel, “Love, Stargirl. The story follows Stargirl and her mother, Ana, as they move to Los Angeles after Ana is hired as a costume designer for a movie. In LA, Stargirl makes new friends and explores her creativity while navigating fame and success. The film premiered on May 23, 2022, at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and was released on Disney+ on June 3, 2022.
The sequel was announced with Julia Hart returning as director and Grace VanderWaal reprising her role as Stargirl Caraway. Elijah Richardson and Judy Greer joined the cast in early 2021, with Greer replacing Sara Arrington as Ana and Richardson playing Evan, the romantic lead. Titled “Hollywood Stargirl,” the film follows Stargirl’s journey as she experiences fame and success. Uma Thurman portrays Roxanne Martel, a musician admired by Stargirl, while Michael Penn composed the film’s music. Judd Hirsch and Tyrel Jackson Williams play Mr. Mitchell, Stargirl’s new neighbor, and Terrell, Evan’s older brother and aspiring filmmaker, respectively. Principal photography took place in Orange County, California, from May to July 2021.
VanderWaal wrote and performed the original song “Figure it Out” for the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received positive reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10. Critics praised the sequel for its creativity and pleasant narrative, with Courtney Howard of Variety highlighting its potential to develop a new Disney franchise. Kate Erbland of IndieWire gave it a B- rating, appreciating Stargirl’s unconventional yet genuine character that emphasizes self-authenticity.
