The story begins in Jackson, Kentucky, in 1997. The film follows J. D., an adult reflecting on his childhood as he visits his family in Ohio, including his grandparents and his mother, Bev. Fourteen years later, J. D. is a student at Yale University, juggling three jobs to pay for his tuition while dating a woman named Usha. When Usha secures a summer internship in Washington D.C., J. D. hopes to do the same. He attends a networking event to land the internship but receives a call from his sister, Lindsay, who informs him that Bev has been hospitalized after a heroin overdose. Lindsay, overwhelmed with caring for her three children, asks J. D. to come home. Torn between his family obligations and his career aspirations, J. D. hesitates, fearing he might miss his chance at the internship.
The narrative shifts to J. D.’s memories of his turbulent childhood with Bev, who struggled with mental health issues, emotional instability, and drug addiction. He recalls a particularly harrowing incident when a seemingly fun trip to a sports card store turned into a nightmare. After an argument, Bev drove recklessly, stopped abruptly, and physically assaulted him. Terrified, J. D. ran to a nearby house and called his grandmother. When the police arrived, J. D. lied to protect Bev, and his grandparents later picked him up.
In 2011, J. D. decides to return to Ohio. Upon arriving at the hospital, he finds Bev causing a scene. He learns that the hospital plans to discharge her due to her lack of health insurance. Amidst the chaos, J. D. receives a call notifying him of an interview at Yale the following morning.
