Storyline:
Rae shines in yet another lukewarm reboot of a teen classic. Similar to TikTok trends designed to appeal to broad audiences, *He’s All That*, directed by Mark Waters and written by R. Lee Fleming Jr., struggles to inspire. While it aims for a carefree vibe and cultural relevance, it fails to resonate deeply.
Rae makes her screen debut as Padgett Sawyer, a high school senior and influencer known as @PadgettHeadtoToe. Unlike Freddie Prinze Jr.’s character Zachary Siler in the original, Padgett conceals her modest background (her mother, played by Rachael Leigh Cook, is a nurse) behind a polished facade. She lies about her address and constantly maintains her image, often to an excessive degree.
The 90-minute film closely follows the original’s plot. Within minutes, Padgett discovers her boyfriend, Jordan Van Draanen, a wannabe viral musician, cheating on her. Her humiliation goes viral after an unflattering livestream moment, costing her sponsorships. In a bid to restore her reputation, she accepts a bet to transform Cameron Kweller, a cynical outcast with a love for photography and horses, into prom king within six weeks.
Though Fleming’s script feels like an adult’s attempt to capture Gen Z culture (e.g., “put your TikToks down and see real dancing!” says the principal, played by Matthew Lillard), the film moves quickly. It reimagines classic scenes with modern touches, including a Gatsby-themed party and a cameo from Kourtney Kardashian as a sharp brand manager, while emphasizing the pressure of maintaining social media popularity.
