The story follows Herbie, a sentient Volkswagen Beetle, who ends up in a junkyard after a series of race losses. Maggie Peyton, the youngest member of a racing family, visits the junkyard with her father, Ray Peyton Sr., to pick a car as her college graduation gift. She chooses Herbie, and the car takes her to her mechanic friend Kevin, who helps prepare it for a car show. Herbie cleverly tricks Maggie into racing against NASCAR champion Trip Murphy, which she narrowly wins.
Although Kevin encourages Maggie to continue racing, her father is hesitant due to her past involvement in a street racing accident. Determined to face Herbie again, Trip organizes a local racing competition, which Maggie and Kevin enter. Herbie effortlessly qualifies for the final race against Trip. However, when Trip challenges Maggie to a high-stakes race, Herbie, jealous of Maggie’s interest in Trip’s car, intentionally loses the race.
