Description: “Hellraiser,” released in 2022, is an American supernatural horror film directed by David Bruckner. The screenplay, written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, is based on a story they co-developed with David S. Goyer. This film is a reboot of the *Hellraiser* franchise and serves as the second adaptation of Clive Barker’s 1986 novella, *The Hellbound Heart*, which originally inspired the 1987 film of the same name. It is the eleventh installment in the series. Produced by Spyglass Media Group and Phantom Four Films, the movie features a cast including Odessa A’zion, Jamie Clayton, Brandon Flynn, Goran Višnjić, Drew Starkey, Adam Faison, Aoife Hinds, Selina Lo, and Hiam Abbass.
The idea of remaking *Hellraiser* began in October 2007, with Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury initially attached as directors. Clive Barker was set to produce, while Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton were to write the script. However, after Bustillo and Maury left the project, Dimension Films brought in Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier to take over, with production planned for late 2011 or early 2012. Following the release of *Hellraiser: Revelations* to maintain franchise rights, Farmer confirmed his and Lussier’s departure.
By 2018, spurred by the success of *Halloween*, Miramax Films announced plans for new *Hellraiser* projects, including a prequel and a reboot. The 2022 reboot was officially greenlit in 2019, with Bruckner directing and Collins and Piotrowski writing a script closer to Barker’s original work. Filming occurred from September to October 2021.
The movie premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 28, 2022, and was released as a Hulu original film on October 7, 2022, distributed by Disney Platform Distribution.
