**Storyline:**
Happy Gilmore is a failed ice hockey player whose only skills are fighting and delivering powerful slapshots. After yet another unsuccessful tryout, Gilmore discovers that his grandmother owes the IRS $270,000 in back taxes. She has 90 days to settle the debt, or her home will be foreclosed.
During an encounter with movers repossessing his grandmother’s furniture, Gilmore is challenged to a long-drive golf contest using his grandfather’s old clubs. With his unconventional, slapshot-style swing, he hits the ball nearly 400 yards, winning $40. This inspires him to hustle golfers at a driving range, where he meets Chubbs Peterson, a former tour star and club pro who lost a hand in an alligator attack. Recognizing Gilmore’s potential, Chubbs encourages him to join the professional golf tour to earn the prize money needed to save his grandmother’s house.
Gilmore wins a local tournament, securing a spot on the tour. He quickly becomes a crowd favorite due to his massive drives and quirky behavior, such as asking the audience to cheer during his swing. However, his lack of golf etiquette and poor putting skills draw criticism from arrogant pro Shooter McGavin and tour Commissioner Doug Thompson. Public relations head Virginia Venit convinces Thompson not to expel Gilmore, citing increased TV ratings and sponsorships. With Virginia’s guidance, Gilmore works on his temper and performance, and the two develop a romantic connection.
During the Pepsi Pro-Am event, Gilmore struggles after Shooter hires a heckler to distract him. The situation escalates when Gilmore gets into a fistfight with his celebrity partner, Bob Barker.
