Description: In June 1592, one month after the sea battle at Sacheon, daimyo Wakisaka Yasuharu arrives at the Japanese naval base in Busan to take command of the fleet and counter the threat posed by Joseon commander Yi Sun-sin. From terrified survivors of the battle, he learns about a new, fully enclosed Joseon battleship, nicknamed “bokkaisen” after a mythical sea monster and “mekurabune” (blind ship). However, the engagement reveals critical flaws in its design, such as the fixed dragon head at the bow getting stuck after ramming attacks and weaker flank armor. Wakisaka joins forces with the rest of the Japanese navy to secure a decisive victory in their campaign to conquer Joseon and, ultimately, Ming China.
At the Left Jeolla Navy base in Yeosu, Yi gathers the Joseon admirals to discuss upcoming naval operations. Won Gyun, commander of the Western Fleet, advocates for a defensive strategy rather than a preemptive strike. After news spreads of the Japanese sacking Pyongyang and the king’s retreat to Uiju, other commanders align with Won Gyun’s stance. Inspired by his past experiences as a cavalry general against the Jurchen, Yi devises a new strategy called “Crane Wing,” a crescent-shaped formation designed to trap the enemy from three sides. He also earns the respect of Junsa, a samurai captured at Sacheon who had wounded Yi with an arquebus shot.
However, Japanese spies discover Yi’s base, free their imprisoned comrades, damage the turtle ships with fire, and escape with the construction plans. Yi rushes to meet Na Dae-yong, the ship’s inventor, who is working on an improved version. Yi decides not to use the turtle ships in the next battle, aware that Wakisaka will exploit their weaknesses.
