Description: “Hamilton” is a 2020 American historical fiction musical film based on a live stage recording of the 2015 Broadway musical of the same name. Inspired by Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography “Alexander Hamilton,” the production was directed and produced by Thomas Kail, with Lin-Manuel Miranda serving as writer, composer, and lead actor. Miranda portrays Alexander Hamilton, the U.S. Treasury Secretary and Founding Father, alongside the original Broadway cast.
The film combines footage from three June 2016 performances at New York City’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, featuring the principal Broadway cast before their departures. It also includes additional scenes filmed without an audience, utilizing techniques like Steadicam, crane shots, and dolly movements. Originally captured by RadicalMedia for the 2016 documentary “Hamilton’s America,” the film incorporates a one-minute intermission.
Most of the original Broadway cast appears in the film, except for Betsy Struxness and Emmy Raver-Lampman, whose roles were taken over by Hope Easterbrook and Elizabeth Judd. Jonathan Groff reprised his role as King George III, returning after his departure earlier in 2016, and also provides the voice of the pre-show announcer.
In February 2020, Walt Disney Studios acquired global distribution rights for $75 million, outbidding competitors like Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Netflix. This deal, one of the most expensive film rights acquisitions, was facilitated by Disney Pictures president Sean Bailey and initiated by Disney CEO Bob Iger’s personal interest in the project. The film is produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller, and Thomas Kail.
