In 1962, Tracy Turnblad, a 16-year-old high school student with a curvy figure, lives in Baltimore. Alongside her best friend Penny Pingleton, Tracy is a devoted fan of *The Corny Collins Show*, a popular local teen dance television program. The show features several students from Tracy and Penny’s school, including the lead dancers Amber von Tussle and her boyfriend Link Larkin. Amber’s mother, Velma, manages WYZT, the station airing the show, ensuring her daughter remains in the spotlight. While the majority of the dancers are White, African-American performers are only allowed on the show once a month during “Negro Day,” hosted by R&B disc jockey Motormouth Maybelle.
When a spot opens on the show, Tracy auditions but is rejected by Velma due to her size and her support for integration. Tracy ends up in detention, where she meets the “Negro Day” dancers, including Seaweed, Motormouth Maybelle’s son. Seaweed teaches Tracy various dance moves, and during her exit, she accidentally crosses paths with Link, sparking her dreams of a life with him. At a local record hop, Tracy’s newfound dance skills catch Corny Collins’ attention, earning her a spot on the show.
Tracy’s popularity soars, threatening Amber’s chances of winning the annual “Miss Teenage Hairspray” pageant. Tracy also begins to win over Link, who grows increasingly fond of her. Meanwhile, Tracy encourages her agoraphobic mother, Edna, to step out of her comfort zone and accompany her to Mr. Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway boutique, where Tracy becomes the new spokesgirl. Tracy also introduces Seaweed to Penny, and the two develop a connection. Later, Seaweed and his sister Little Inez take Tracy, Penny, and Link to a party at Maybelle’s store.
