Description: In 1950s Hollywood, Eddie Mannix serves as the head of physical production at Capitol Pictures. As the studio’s troubleshooter, he handles various issues, including managing scandals involving the studio’s stars, dealing with gossip columnists Thora and Thessaly Thacker, and considering a lucrative job offer from Lockheed Corporation. When DeeAnna Moran, a synchronized swimming actress, becomes pregnant out of wedlock, Mannix arranges for her to place the child in foster care and later adopt it discreetly to protect her career.
Meanwhile, Baird Whitlock, a dim-witted but talented actor starring in the studio’s major film *Hail, Caesar! A Tale of the Christ*, is drugged and kidnapped. He wakes up in a meeting with “The Future,” a group of blacklisted Communist screenwriters, who quickly persuade him to join their cause. The group demands a $100,000 ransom for Whitlock’s return, which Mannix secures from the studio. Mannix negotiates with Thora to withhold a story in exchange for information about Hobie Doyle, a singing Western film star struggling to adapt to a sophisticated comedy role.
Despite the efforts of director Laurence Laurentz, Doyle struggles with his thick Western accent. Mannix convinces Laurentz to continue coaching Doyle, while reassuring Doyle about his performance. Mannix also confides in him about Whitlock’s kidnapping.
Later, Doyle attends a premiere with actress Carlotta Valdez, where he spots the ransom money being carried by musical star Burt Gurney. Mannix and Moran meet with Joseph Silverman, a reliable agent who agrees to foster Moran’s child, earning her trust. Doyle follows Gurney to The Future’s beach house, only to find Whitlock alone. The Future members attempt to defect to the USSR with Gurney but lose the ransom money in the ocean. Doyle rescues Whitlock and returns him to the studio as the police arrest the group.
