Description: In 1995, during the Kashmir insurgency, Hilaal Meer, a doctor from Srinagar, agrees to perform an appendectomy on Ikhlaque, the leader of a pro-separatist militant group. To avoid detection, he conducts the surgery at his home, which angers his wife Ghazala, who questions his loyalty. The next day, during a military raid, Hilaal is accused of sheltering terrorists. A shootout occurs at his house, resulting in Ikhlaque’s death and Hilaal’s capture for interrogation. The doctor’s home is later bombed to eliminate any remaining militants.
Some time later, Ghazala’s son Haider returns from Aligarh Muslim University to investigate his father’s disappearance. He is shocked to find his mother singing and laughing with her brother-in-law, Khurram. Confused by her behavior, Haider begins searching for his father with the help of his childhood sweetheart, Arshia Lone, a journalist.
As winter sets in, Haider grows despondent over the increasing closeness between his mother and Khurram, and his inability to find leads. However, Arshia meets a stranger named Roohdaar, who contacts Haider with information about his father. Roohdaar, a member of a Pakistani separatist group, reveals that he and Hilaal were imprisoned in a detention camp run by a counterinsurgency militia led by Khurram. The group executed both men, but Roohdaar survived. He conveys Hilaal’s final wish: Haider must avenge Khurram’s betrayal.
Overwhelmed with grief and anger, Haider begins acting erratically, shaving his head and staging public protests against the government.
